  • International Space Station will plummet to a watery grave in 2030

International Space Station will plummet to a watery grave in 2030

The International Space Station (ISS) will continue its operations until 2030 before heading for a watery grave at the most remote point in the Pacific, Nasa confirmed in a new transition plan this week.

More than 30 years after its 1998 launch, the ISS will be “de-orbited” in January 2031, according to the space agency’s budget estimates. Once out of orbit the space station will make a dramatic descent before splash landing in Point Nemo, which is about 2,700km from any land and has become known as the space cemetery, a final resting place for decommissioned space stations, old satellites, and other human space debris.

Also known as the “Oceanic Pole of Inaccessibility” or the “South Pacific Ocean Uninhabited Area,” the region around the space cemetery is known for its utter lack of human activity. It’s “pretty much the farthest place from any human civilization you can find”, as NASA put it.

Nasa said it plans to continue future space research by buying space and time for astronaut scientists on commercial spacecraft.

While celebrating the ISS’s record of scientific accomplishments, Robyn Gatens, the director of the International Space Station at NASA Headquarters, also emphasized in a statement that its current goal was to “lay the groundwork for a commercial future in low-Earth orbit”.

“We look forward to sharing our lessons learned and operations experience with the private sector to help them develop safe, reliable and cost-effective destinations in space,” said Phil McAlister, the director of commercial space at Nasa headquarters, said in a statement.

Nasa estimated that transitioning its space research from a dedicated space station to renting space aboard commercial space ventures would save $1.3bn in 2031 alone, and that the savings could “be applied to Nasa’s deep space exploration initiatives, allowing the agency to explore further and faster into deep space”.

The ISS, about the size of an American football field, orbits the earth about once every 90 minutes, and has been continuously occupied by astronauts since November 2000.

In September, a Russian official warned that small cracks had been discovered on the space station that could worsen over time and raised concerns about aging equipment and the risk of “irreparable failures”, BBC News reported.

The space station was originally intended to operate for just 15 years, but Nasa said in a report that “there is high confidence that ISS life can be further extended through 2030”, though some analyses of its viability are still being conducted.

ISS was “examining the recent technical issues aboard the Russian segment”, Nasa said in its report.

Since 1971, nearly 300 different chunks of space debris, including at least five space stations, have been sunk at Point Nemo, most of them American or Russian in origin, according to a law review article about the space cemetery’s environmental impact.

The space station’s end is likely to be fiery. The ”downfall” of Mir the Russian space station, happened in March 2001, when a cargo ship fired its engines to push the space station out of orbit and send it plummeting towards earth. While solar panels and other peripheral pieces of the space station broke off during its fall, about 20 to 25 tons of remnants fell together, resulting in sonic booms, according to Nasa’s documentation.

  • NKorea launches second hypersonic missile in fiery test

NKorea launches second hypersonic missile in fiery test

North Korea fired a “hypersonic missile” this week that successfully hit a target, state news agency KCNA reported on Thursday, its second such test as the country pursues new military capabilities amid stalled denuclearisation talks.

The launch on Wednesday was the first by North Korea since October and was detected by several militaries in the region, drawing criticism https://www.reuters.com/world/asia-pacific/north-korea-fired-what-could-be-ballistic-missile-japan-coast-guard-2022-01-04 from governments in the United States, South Korea, and Japan.

North Korea first tested a hypersonic missile in September, joining a race headed by major military powers to deploy the advanced weapons system.

Hypersonic weapons usually fly towards targets at lower altitudes than ballistic missiles and can achieve more than five times the speed of sound – or about 6,200 km per hour (3,850 mph).

Despite their name, analysts say the main feature of hypersonic weapons is not speed – which can sometimes be matched or exceeded by traditional ballistic missile warheads – but their manoeuvrability.

In Wednesday’s test, the “hypersonic gliding warhead” detached from its rocket booster and manoeuvred 120 km (75 miles) laterally before it “precisely hit” a target 700 km (430 miles) away, KCNA reported.

The missile demonstrated its ability to combine “multi-step glide jump flight and strong lateral manoeuvring,” KCNA said.

The test also confirmed components such as flight control and its ability to operate in the winter, KCNA added.

“The successive successes in the test launches in the hypersonic missile sector have strategic significance in that they hasten a task for modernizing strategic armed force of the state,” the KCNA report said.

While it has not tested nuclear bombs or long-range intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) since 2017, in recent years North Korea has developed and launched a range of more manoeuvrable missiles and warheads likely aimed at being able to overcome missile defences like those wielded by South Korea and the United States, analysts have said.

“My impression is that the North Koreans have identified hypersonic gliders as a potentially useful qualitative means to cope with missile defence,” said Ankit Panda, a senior fellow at the U.S.-based Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

    NEW MISSILE

Hypersonic weapons are considered the next generation of arms that aim to rob adversaries of reaction time and traditional defeat mechanisms.

Last month the United States completed construction https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-pentagon-radar-idUSKBN2IL23X of a massive, $1.5 billion long-range radar for a homeland missile defence system in Alaska that it says can track ballistic missiles as well as hypersonic weapons from countries such as North Korea.

Photos of the missile used in Wednesday’s test show what analysts said is a liquid-fueled ballistic missile with a conical-shaped Manoeuvrable Reentry Vehicle (MaRV) blasting off from a wheeled launch vehicle in a cloud of flame and smoke.

It is a different version than the weapon tested last year, and was first unveiled at a defence exhibition in Pyongyang in October, Panda said.

“They likely set up at least two separate development programmes,” he added. “One of these was the Hwasong-8, which was tested in September. This missile, which shares a few features in common with the Hwasong-8, is another.”

In a call with Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi on Thursday, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken condemned the North Korea missile launch and discussed cooperation to achieve complete denuclearization and lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula, the U.S. State Department said in a statement.

“We take any new capability seriously, and as we’ve said, we condemn (North Korea’s) continued testing of ballistic missiles, which are destabilizing to the region and to the international community,” a State Department spokesperson said later.

Talks aimed at persuading North Korea to surrender its nuclear weapons and ballistic missile arsenal have been stalled since a series of summits between leader Kim Jong Un and then-U.S. President Donald Trump broke down with no agreement.

U.S. President Joe Biden’s administration has said it is open to talking to North Korea, but Pyongyang has said American overtures are empty rhetoric without more substantive changes to “hostile policies” such as military drills and sanctions.

The latest test came just hours before South Korean President Moon Jae-in attended a groundbreaking ceremony for a rail line he hopes will eventually connect the divided Korean peninsula, casting doubts over his hopes for an eleventh-hour diplomatic breakthrough with North Korea before his five-year term ends in May.

  • MIT engineering produce the World Longest Flexible fiber battery

MIT engineering produce the World Longest Flexible fiber battery

MIT engineers have developed a rechargeable lithium-ion battery in the form of an ultra-long fiber that could be woven into fabrics. The “world’s longest flexible fiber battery” could enable a wide variety of wearable electronic device and might even be used to make 3D- printed batteries in virtually any shape.

The new flexible fiber battery is manufactured using novel battery gels and a standard fiber-drawing system that starts with a larger cylinder containing all the components and then heats it to just below its melting point. The materials are then pushed through a narrow opening which compresses them to a fraction of their original diameter while maintaining all the original arrangement.

Previous efforts in making batteries in fiber form were structured with key materials on the outside of the fiber, whereas this system embeds the lithium and other materials inside the fiber with a protective outside coating, thus directly making this version stable and waterproof. It also incorporates the novel gel electrodes and a gel electrolyte, which makes the battery fire-resistant.

“When we embed the active materials inside the fiber, that means sensitive battery components already have a good sealing,” says the study  author Tural Khudiyev “and all the active materials are very well-integrated, so they don’t change their position” during the drawing process.

The resulting battery is weavable, washable, and cut to a length of 140 meters is the longest flexible fiber battery in the world. The fiber produced so far has an energy storage capacity of 123 milliamp-hours, which can charge smartwatches or phones, Khudiyev says. The fiber device is only a few hundred microns in thickness, thinner than any previous attempts to produce batteries in fiber form.

“The beauty of our approach is that we can embed multiple devices in an individual fiber,” Lee says, “unlike other approaches which need integration of multiple fiber devices.” They demonstrated the integration of LED and Li-ion battery. in a single fiber, and he believes more than three or four devices can be combined in such a small space in the future. “When we integrate these fibers containing multi-devices, the aggregate will advance the realization of a compact fabric computer.”

The team has already applied for a patent on the process and continues to develop further improvements in power capacity and variations on the materials used to improve efficiency. Khudiyev says such fiber batteries could be ready for use in commercial products within a few years.

  • NASA spacecraft ‘touches’ sun for 1st time, dives into atmosphere

NASA spacecraft ‘touches’ sun for 1st time, dives into atmosphere

CAPE CANAVERAL: A NASA spacecraft has officially “touched” the sun, plunging through the unexplored solar atmosphere known as the corona.

    Scientists announced the news Tuesday.

NASA’S Parker Solar Probe has become the first spacecraft, actually flew through the corona in April during the spacecraft’s eighth close approach to the sun.

Scientists say it took a few months to get the data back and then several more months to confirm it.

Launched in 2018, Parker was 8 million miles from the center of the sun when it first crossed the uneven boundary between the solar atmosphere and outgoing solar wind. The spacecraft dipped in and out of the corona at least three times, each a smooth transition, according to scientists.

It will keep drawing ever closer to the sun and diving deeper over the next 3 1/2 years.
